In the mountains above Kyrenia, nestles the castle of St Hilarion;
named after a hermit who once inhabited the summit. Its highest
point is just under 2,400 feet (732m) and because so much of its
buildings remain remarkably intact, it is acknowledged as one of
the most impressive of the Crusader castles.
Originally the site of a seventh century lookout to give warning
of Arab raiders, the castle was enhanced into a well-defended fort
during Byzantine rule. The French added apartments for the knights,
cisterns to collect water and chapels for worship. The Byzantine
church in the castle's middle ward still displays traces of tenth
